The 2024 Ram 2500 or 3500: Which Heavy-Duty Truck Will Best Fit Your Needs?
February 02 2024 - support@wikimotive.com
Choosing the right heavy-duty Ram pickup truck can seem like taking a calculus class at times. Simply looking at the exterior of the truck, you may not be able to tell much of a difference between a three-quarter-ton truck or a one-ton truck, but once you start looking at the gross vehicle weight ratings, the payload capacities, the trailering capacities, the differences in cargo based on powertrain and drivetrain configurations, as well as the utility you're capable (or incapable) of handling based on feature-set, cab configuration and bed format, it can all seem overwhelming. You're measuring all sorts of different variables and then trying to figure out which heavy-duty variants you're going to be shopping for from a Ram dealer.
This whole process doesn't have to be difficult, though. The reason for that is that there are a lot of ways to configure a truck for a number of different purposes. However, you can remove a lot of the mystery work involved by simply outlining uses and expectations for the truck, and that's what we aim to do with this article. It's designed to help you figure out the right kind of heavy-duty pickup that will benefit your driving propensities and what you plan on using the truck for as you shop for a 2024 Ram heavy-duty pickup. So, let's review some of the preferences that will help you determine which heavy-duty Ram is right for you between the 2024 Ram 2500 and the 2024 Ram 3500.
How Much Towing Are You Planning on Doing?
The differences between a Ram 2500 and a Ram 3500 aren't as big or as vast as you might expect in certain ways, but it all depends on the trim and what you're using the truck for. For instance, if you're looking at a more luxury-focused truck that's fully featured, the towing differences between the 2500 and 3500 aren't that significant. In fact, the smallest difference between the two when it comes to towing is actually just 480 lbs. With the entry-level towing capacity of 2500 being 17,730 lbs, and the entry-level towing capacity for the 3500 being 18,210 lbs, this is because the entry-level powertrains are the same, a 6.4-liter HEMI Apache V8 that produces 410 hp at 429 lb-ft of torque. However, if your goal is to do major towing and trailering, where you need to move cargo that's well over 15,000 lbs, then the 2500 hits its peak at 19,990 lbs with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel, which offers 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. However, the 3500 peaks at 37,090 lbs when properly equipped, thanks to having access to the high-output version of the 6.7-liter Cummins, which makes 420 hp at 1,075 lb-ft of torque. This is due to the fact that the 3500 is not only available with a high-output diesel, but it's also available in dual rear-wheel drive, also known as a dually. In conjunction with the reinforced frame, leaf springs instead of coil-over springs, and solid axles, the 3500 can tow a lot more cargo than the 2500. If you don't plan on towing or trailering cargo above 15,000 or 20,000 lbs, then the Ram 2500 would likely be the better option. If you are going above 15,000 or 20,000 lbs, then the Ram 3500 is the way to go.Are You Going to Be Doing a Lot of Hauling?
Apart from trailering, a heavy-duty pickup truck's next most important utility feature is its hauling capabilities. In this regard, you can't go wrong with either the 2024 Ram 2500 or the Ram 3500. However, scalability is still the issue when it comes to the top-end hauling capabilities of the Ram 2500. It starts at 3,150 lbs and tops out at 4,000 lbs. The Ram 3500, however, starts at 6,570 lbs and scales up to 7,680 lbs in terms of total payload capacity. So if hauling a lot of goods is part of your workload, then the 3500 beats the 2500 handily. If you're doing a lot of transportation or moving a lot of heavy material such as debris, logging, or mechanical parts, then a Ram 3500 is literally built for that kind of hauling demand. However, the Ram 2500 offers enough tonnage capacity for most material transportation but without being as heavy or as expensive as the Ram 3500, which may make it more enticing for those who need something larger than a light-duty but not as big as a one-ton heavy duty.
What Are You Plans for Off-Roading?
Heavy-duty trucks aren't always the first go-to option for off-roading. Usually, light-duty and midsize trucks are the choice trucks for this recreation. However, heavy-duty trucks are excellent for certain off-road disciplines, especially muddying, thanks to their torque and reinforced chassis. For trails, camping, and overlanding, a heavy-duty variant of the Ram pickup truck works well enough. However, this is where the three-quarter-ton shines a lot more than the one-ton Ram. With the 2024 Ram 2500, you have access to off-road specific configurations, like the Ram 2500 Rebel and Power Wagon, giving you four-wheel drive capabilities and rugged off-road utility and functionality. If you wanted a heavy-duty truck that could tow, haul, and head off-road, you definitely get those capabilities with the 2500 Rebel and Power Wagon, thanks to features like a disconnecting sway bar, electronically locking rear differential, monotube shocks from Bilstein, 33-inch off-road tires, and an available Warn winch. Sadly, the 2024 Ram 3500 does not have the Rebel or Power Wagon trims, so you're limited to daily driving, workloads, and luxury driving when it comes to the Ram 3500.Is Your 2024 Ram Going to Be for Recreation or Work?
Sometimes, you have a heavy-duty truck around for family outings, recreational work around the house, moving material around for weekend projects, or venturing off into the wilderness on the weekend. For recreation, a Ram 2500 might seem a bit like overkill, but if you need a truck for all sorts of miscellaneous tasks and some light work-related tasks, then the Ram 2500 is quite versatile for both needs. If you're more focused on work, however, and you need a heavy-duty pickup truck for doing a lot of plowing, moving, trailering, hauling, or towing – or you need a truck for upfitting purposes – then the Ram 3500 is the truck to have. Thanks to the trim versatility, you can also make use of it as a daily driver as well, giving you some good variety if you need a four-door cabin that seats six for daily errands or commuting to and from work. The Ram 3500 isn't quite as recreationally focused as the Ram 2500, but it is scaled more for heavy-duty work tasks. What Sort of Family Travel Are You Expecting to Engage in With the Truck?
Are you looking for a heavy-duty truck that gets a lot of things done but is also going to be used for family purposes? Maybe you plan on using the truck to pick up or drop the kids off at school? Or maybe you're looking for a truck that pulls double duty as a work truck and a truck for family outings? In that regard, heavy-duty trucks offer enough utility and interior comfort for both tasks. Between the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500, both can very easily engage in daily tasks for family travel. The Ram 3500 is available in Regular Cab, while both the 2500 and 3500 are available in Crew Cab and Mega Cab configurations, seating up to six people. Both trucks are also available in standard and long bed boxes and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. So, if you are keen on plenty of family picnics throughout the year, camping trips, or tailgate parties, you can configure both variations of the heavy-duty Ram for those purposes. Your choices between the two regarding a family vehicle will likely boil down to price, and in that regard, the 2500 would likely win out.
