Powertrains

Both base-level trims on the 2500 and 3500 come standard with a 6.4L HEMI V8 gas-powered engine that can produce up to 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the trim, you can get a 6.7L Cummins I-6 diesel engine instead, producing 370 hp but upping torque to a whopping 850 lb-ft. If you want more torque than that, you'll have to go with a Ram 3500, which offers a high-output version of the diesel engine that can't be had on the 2500. With the high-output diesel engine under the hood, you can produce 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque.Towing & Payload Capacities
High stats can come in handy whether you use your truck for work or play. The maximum payload for the Ram 3500 comes from the 6.4L HEMI V8 engine at 7,680 lbs. The Ram 2500s maximum payload also comes from its 6.4L HEMI V8 and tops out at 4000 lbs.
Off-Road Capability
While the 3500 is the clear winner for towing and hauling, the 2500 has a distinct strength: off-road capability. While both HD trucks are built tough and have great suspension systems, only the 2500 has trims designed with off-roading in mind. Because it offers the most power, the 3500 is more expensive than the 2500 across the board. The difference in starting price isn't huge when you look at any given trim level—you'll generally be looking at an extra one or two thousand dollars to upgrade to the 3500, depending on trim. Still, the price difference is one reason a driver might stick to the 2500 instead of springing for the 3500. If you aren't going to make use of the higher stats that the stronger truck delivers, then there's no sense in paying extra for the extra capability you don't need.Interior Comfort
